Shulem Deen will discuss his memoir, All Who Go Do Not Return, winner of the National Jewish Book Award in 2015. A moving and revealing exploration of Hasidic life, the book explores Deen’s struggles with faith, family, and community as he grows up in, and then chooses to leave, the Skverers, one of America’s most insular Hasidic sects. A columnist for Forward, Deen’s articles have appeared in the New Republic, Salon, and Tablet. He is a member of the board of Footsteps, an organization that assists those who have left the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. This lecture is free and open to the public.
