Nina's Tragedies straddles the line between dark comedy and deep drama. The Nina in the movie's title is the beautiful aunt of the film's 14-year-old narrator, Nadav. Nadav is in love with Nina. But Nina has too many things swirling around her life, most notably the tragic death of her husband and the sudden emergence of a suitor. With no one to confide in, Nadav keeps a detailed diary of his escapades following his aunt.
Nina's Tragedies continues the run of recent Israeli films that are apolitical - and most worth shouting about. It's easy to see why Nina's Tragedies won 11 Israeli Academy Awards. The dry humor is disarming. The ensemble cast is engaging. And the main plot is suspenseful.
